How to Quit Smoking with Exercise

by admin on August 11, 2009

If you want a great method for quitting smoking, I would recommend you try the gradual exercise method.  What you do is to start an exercise program while you are still smoking cigarettes and plan on diligently following the program through your quit.  Plan on quitting a few months after you have established an exercise routine.

I do not necessarily recommend the gym membership route.  Rather, I would encourage you to either run or walk every single day.  A good baseline is 40 minutes of continuous walking, jogging, or running each day.  This is a tough commitment at first but if you can stick with it for over a month then it will greatly enhance your ability to quit smoking.  There are a number of reasons that this is the case:

1) You will learn discipline by exercising daily.  This discipline will help you to quit smoking.

2) You will condition your body to produce more dopamine every day, and thus keep your level of “feel-good” chemicals higher in your body.  This is going to be super important when you quit smoking.

3) You will feel healthier, and extend this feeling of good health even further when you quit smoking.

4) You will lose weight and keep it down a bit, which will help when you finally quit smoking and gain a bit of it back (inevitable weight gain, all you can do is actively fight it through calorie reduction or exercise).

It is because of these 4 reasons that you can definitely learn how to quit smoking through the use of regular exercise.  Making exercise one of the focal points of your quitting strategy is a smart move and will benefit you in a number of different ways.  It is a powerful approach to quitting because it is holistic in nature.
