Do you need quit smoking pills to help you quit smoking, or are they just a distraction that come with the added expense of having side effects? Are they worth trying in order to help you stop?
Well first of all, you should probably talk with your doctor about the possibility. That is the most important thing, because your doctor can make the best assessment as to whether or not the medication is right for you and your situation or not.
Now in most cases, smoking is so bad for you and the long term health effects are so damaging, that almost any risk with medications and their side effects is worth taking in order to try and quit. In other words, the ends almost always justifies the means in this case, because the price of continuing to smoke is just too high. You need to do whatever it takes and whatever you can in order to successfully quit smoking. The benefits to doing so are so great as to make any risks involved very minor in comparison. The biggest risk is to continue smoking and thus end up dying approximately 10 years before your time from lung cancer. That is the biggest risk. Taking a quit smoking medication and suffering some minor side effect is not that big a deal in comparison.
Now if you have tried to quit in the past but couldn’t manage to do so, then by all means you should talk with your doctor about trying either Chantix or Zyban. The studies seems to show that the Chantix did a little better in clinical trials so I would start with inquiring about that particular medication first. If for some reason your doctor does not want you taking that, then you can look into the possibility of the other medication as well. Either way, the key is to take action and get motivated in terms of doing something.
To some extent, the quit smoking pill is a great motivator, even if it was a placebo that did nothing. In reality, you have gone through all the trouble of getting the prescription, talking with your doctor, and picking the medication up and taking it every day. It is a lot of effort and a big commitment and all of this will help push you towards taking the proper action to quit smoking. Even if the pill did nothing, it will get you in the right mindset to take action towards quitting.
